Description:

This half-day collaborative workshop is designed for firm owners planning for future transition and emerging leaders who are interested in assuming a leadership role. Both groups will better understand what is required of them to make this process successful.

Many firms struggle with ownership transition planning, particularly with identifying and preparing the next generation of firm leadership for the new responsibilities this role involves. Mentoring emerging leaders gives them the tools and confidence to evolve within the profession, while also enabling existing founders to maximize the value they’ve built in their firms over the years.

We’ll explore several common issues surrounding ownership transition, including:

  • When firm leaders and rising leaders should begin thinking about ownership transition.

  • What options are available to those approaching retirement and for those considering ownership.

  • How successors can truly leverage the knowledge and connections of the founder.

  • How firm leaders can offer the next generation the mentorship, tools, and skills to succeed.

  • How a career ladder can be created to give structure to emerging leadership development.

  • How the mechanics of ownership transition work, including valuation, financial exchange, business operations, and governance of the firm.

Using the interactive Mentimeter platform, we’ll assess the key challenges facing all parties involved. Facilitated topical break-out sessions will enable attendees to explore areas of opportunity and concern. We’ll cite relevant case studies to illustrate both standard and creative approaches to ownership transition. The goal of this workshop is to demystify the transition process and align the interests of firm owners and emerging leadership.

Learner Outcomes:

  1. Discover the importance of setting goals and understanding preferred outcomes in planning for ownership transition.

  2. Explore options for ownership transition pathways depending on the timeframe to retirement and openness to sharing leadership.

  3. Understand best practices for identifying the right people to be successors and how to create a framework for a partnership agreement.

  4. Learn how to prepare emerging leaders for a future ownership role through structured stages of professional development.
